A Beautiful Place To Heal

Günes Kale

My practice is located on a 75 meter high hill called Süllberg in the picturesque quarter of Blankenese at the bank of the river Elbe. Blankenese is one of the most beautiful quarters of Hamburg. Most people feel the beautiful energy of this place.

Legends and myths entwine around the Süllberg. Lore has it that in prechristian times there has existed an offering place on top of the hill. Another lore is citing the Wends to have venerated their Sun god Wedel at the same place, the Saxons are supposed to have honoured their thunder god Thor on the Süllberg. The Romans are to be said to have built a temple here to honour their sun god Sol. That is why - so some people say - the hill was originally called Sol- or Süllenberge. According to legends this temple was completely destroyed by Charlemagne. And for centuries stories are told about the helpful nature spirits such as fairies, elves and dwarfs who are said to dwell here.

Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, admired together with Martha, his wife to be, the beautiful view on the river Elbe, and the german poet Detlev von Liliencron did spend romantic hours here. The tower on top of the hill is the landmark of Blankenese which in earlier times was a fisher village. Also, in the year 2002 the former chef de cuisine of the fine Berlin hotel "Adlon", Karlheinz Hauser, took up residence on top of the Süllberg. There are ballrooms, restaurants and outside terraces as well as the small but nice five-star-hotel "Hotel Süllberg".

Anfahrt Übersicht

By Car:

From South: Drive on the highway A7 direction Hamburg, pass the tunnel underneath the Elbe, "Elbtunnel", on the right lane. At the end of the tunnel take the exit "Othmarschen" and leave the highway.

From North: Take the highway A7 direction Hamburg-Hannover and take the exit directly before the "Elbtunnel".

Follow the description direction Blankenese. Straight ahead on the "Reventlowstraße" and "Halbmondsweg". At the end turn right and follow the "Elbchaussee" for some kilometers. At the beginning of Blankenese you see to your left a gas station "Esso", ca. 150 meter further a gas station "Aral". Straigth ahead, the name of the street changes into "Dockenhudener Straße". Continue following the natural flow of the street, you will see to your right the subway station of Blankenese, to the left "downtown" Blankenese. Just go on straight. The street name changes into "Blankeneser Landstraße". In approximately 300 meters you may see a white sign "Süllberg" shortly before a "Shell" gas station. Turn left into the "Richard-Dehmel-Straße" and follow through to the end. Now you will see the driveway to the Süllberg Hotel and Terraces. Look for a place to park, for example in "Krumdals Weg" or use the parking garage of the Süllberg (blue "p"-sign, 24 h, 1 Euro per hour, ticket for the day: 15 Euros).

Another five Minutes by Foot:

At the end of the "Richard-Dehmel-Straße" to the right of the drive-in of the Süllberg areal please follow the narrow street "Süllbergsterrasse". This is a circular street around the hill top. If you are coming the first time: For your convenience take the narrow street where there are still cars driving and not the pedestrian path to the left. Go approximately 200 meters until you find yourself at a sharp 90-degree-curve. Here at this place you see two blue street signs "Süllbergsterrasse" and "Elbterrasse". Follow the direction "Elbterrasse" and descend some 25 steps alongside a sweet house with a thatched roof. You have nearly made it! Follow the little pedestrian path until you see a little white house in a beautiful garden. Enter - and you will find me at the ground floor. Welcome!

By Subway and Bus:

Take the S1 or S11, for example from Hamburg Main Station or Altona, to Blankenese. At the exit of the subway station you will find bus stations. Take the Mini-bus 48 which is called by the people of Blankenese "Bergziege" (Mountain Goat). Please check if your ticket is including the fair for the bus. Often it is not included! Please leave the bus at the station "Waseberg" (duration of the ride approximately 11 minutes). Turn right into "Richard-Dehmel- Straße" and follow further descriptions above.

By Boat:

You may come by speedboat from downtown or with a ferry from the other side of the river. Leave the boat at "Blankenese Landungsbrücke". You find yourself at the pier Op'n Bull'n. Follow the wooden bridge to the "Strandweg". There you will find a bus station of the bus 48 who brings you up the "Waseberg" to a crossroad with the "Richard-Dehmel-Straße" near the Süllberg. Follow further descriptions above.

Even the longest journey starts with the first step.
